Most of the area of Upper Rock has been kept as a nature reserve and provides travellers with some very interesting wildlife. There area has over 600 plants species and provides refuge for many migrating birds, especially storks and raptors, who migrate between Africa and Europe, whilst the white storks assemble together in flocks of around 3000, to cross the strait. The most famous characters at Upper Rock are its Barbary macaques, the only wild primates in Europe. Some of the monkeys live a place called the Apes' Den, while the others are found at the top of the area’s cable-car station.
