Athens - National Archaeological Museum

Athens sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

This neo-classic marvel built in 1889 houses the greatest collection of Greek archaeological finds in the world, so many exhibits that it would take several visits to do the museum justice. The craftsmanship of the many of the works on display is unrivalled – the Bronze Statue of Poseidon with his magnificently fashioned cloak, Thera frescoes is superb, colourful condition, an immense collection of vases. There is a comprehensive representation of the evolution of traditional Kouros Statues from the early ‘man-boy’ to the fully-grown ‘man’ sculpted hundreds of years later. There is a fascination collection of marble statues from the Cycladic civilisations of the 3rd millennium BC and a gold mask from Mycenae, thought to represent Agamemnon. Be prepared to spend a few hours.
