Somewhat overshadowed by the acropolis but worthy of a few hours nevertheless is the old quarter of Plaka. A labyrinth of unfeasible narrow winding streets it has, in recent years, been extensively renovated and has become increasingly tourist friendly with pastel washed balconies, quaint little churches and the ubiquitous souvenir shops. Despite the many concessions to tourism the area retains much of its charm and is a great place to catch a bite or drink at a café and watch Athens pass you by. Its also a popular area for diners and most of the restaurants, despite being tourist traps, are pretty good.
