Athens - The Acropolis

Athens sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

The most important historical site in Athens (arguably Greece), the Acropolis has kept stately watch over the City over two and a half thousand years. Although much of the sacred city is now ruins the most important temple, the Parthenon, still dominates the site and has been used as Greece’s international symbol since time immemorial. Other highlights include the Erechtheion with its famous Caryatids six columns sculpted into female forms and the Ancient Theatre of Dionysos original home of the Greek Tragedy. Once a lavish complex of colossal gilded and painted structures, monuments and statues it was built by Perikles as a domain for the gods. Today the fascinating treasures discovered at the Acropolis are displayed at its namesake museum
