Indisputably picturesque, the fascinating Old Town of Corfu consist predominantly 19th century architecture but there are plenty of historical gems tucked in between the impressive Venetian terraces and mansions. Most important are the numerous churches, which include the 16th century Metropolitan Church, which houses the remains of St. Theodora Augusta and Church of St.Spiridon where the remains of the patron saint of Corfu himself lie. The Old Town is the focus for much communal activity including theatrical, mystical and artistic festivals and retains a vibrant, enchanting atmosphere much appreciated by both visitors and locals alike.
