Greece - Delos Island

Delos is testimony to the old adage that good things come in small packages. Once one of the three most prestigious religious centres in Greece and now one of the most significant archaeological sites in the country, Delos is a fascinating place to visit. Delos was and is regarded as a sacred island – the birthplace of the legendary twins Apollo and Artemis, and the island chosen as treasury and stronghold of the Delian League during the Persian wars. The ruins of this ancient community include more temples than you can shake a stick at, a theatre, a stadium, the famous Sanctuary of Apollo and even the site of the Sacred Lake where legend places the birth of the twins. No one is allowed to stay on the island, but day trips are available either by flight, ferry or hydrofoil to this stunningly enigmatic island.
