Halkidiki - Holy Mountain

Mt Athos (Holy Mountain) is by far the most beautiful and spectacular of Halkidiki’s three peninsulas and is inhabited by semi autonomous monks from 20 monasteries. Women are forbidden to enter the region and men can only enter by special arrangement, but cruises around the coastline are available which allow glimpses of the monasteries. Those lucky enough to enter the region will be astounded by what they see the incredibly dramatic and unfeasibly lush landscape is equalled only by the awe inspiring works of Byzantine and post Byzantine art on display. This is an art lovers paradise and a journey to this most sacred of places will leave you both humbled and enlightened.
