17km from Kavala stands the major archaeological site of Philippi. The site consists of two early Christian basilicas, parts of the Via Egnatia, the Roman Forum the Acropolis and the Theatre. The theatre has been restored and each summer Greek comedies and tragedies are staged there. One of the most interesting features is the Roman crypt, thought to have been where St.Paul was imprisoned when he visited the island to preach the Gospel during his mission to convert the local inhabitants to Christianity. The site museum contains finds from the site including Neolithic, Hellenistic, Roman and Neochristian relics.
