Greece - Knossos, Crete

Greece sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Knossos is undoubtedly the grandest, biggest and most famous archaeological site on Crete – the resident island to the mythical Minotaur. Once home to the powerful and innovative Minoan civilisation before it’s dramatic destruction by the Santorini eruption of 1500BC, Knossos’ spirit is still very much alive and kicking. The remains of the once spectacular and insanely luxurious Minoan palace constitute the heart of the entire complex. A mere 4000yrs young, the palace is brimming with amazing artefacts in some of the most fascinating rooms in the world. The throne room in particular houses an exquisite throne flanked by the famous Griffin Fresco. With incredible rooms, halls, artefacts and frescoes, Knossos and it’s Minoan Palace are one of the world’s great wonders.
