Nearby the Agora is the lovely Plateria Platanou home of the famous plane tree of Hippocrates, under the shade of which, legend states, the father of modern medicine taught his students (botanical fact states otherwise – plane trees rarely survive longer that 200years). From here you can follow the beautiful Avenue of Palms or Finikon, a bridge that takes you north towards the Venetian Castle of the Knights of St.John. Built in the 15th century it is the city’s principal monument and a classic example of the defensive architecture of its period.
