Amsterdam - The Canals

Amsterdam sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Amsterdam is made up of 90 islands linked by 400 stone bridges across 62 miles of canals. It is by far the best way to appreciate just how picturesque the city really is, the towering merchant houses appearing to lean on each other for support. To be honest most of the canals are pretty damn dirty but keep looking up and you’ll be fine. It is the only way to fully appreciate Amsterdam’s bridges, some unbelievable ornate, others carry messages and some split open to accommodate taller vessels. It’s a whole new world at water level, with house boats of all shapes and sizes lining many of the canal walls adding another dimension to this already colourful city. Winter brings freezing conditions to the Netherlands and, much to the glee of many an Amsterdammer, the canals acquire a think layer of ice. Skating becomes the favourite pastime, but be warned there are patches of thin ice and each year sees a few fatalities.
