Amsterdam - The Red Light District

Arguably Amsterdam’s biggest tourist attraction the Red Light District is also one of its most fascinating and atmospheric areas. The canals and streets are bathed in the warm inviting red glow from the notorious ‘windows’ where prostitutes attempt entice passers by with promises of hot love and often much more. Porn shops, live sex shows, coffeeshops, Chinese restaurants and ethnic food stands all add to the overall and unnervingly pleasant seediness. Dutch laws allow prostitutes to trade legally and around 5000 of them work in the windows and brothels of the Red Light District; they pay tax and must undergo frequent medical check-ups. There are no pimps hanging around and the regular police patrols make this most infamous of areas far safer than most similar districts anywhere else in the world.
