Several million years ago Lake Balaton was filled with seawater. Geological change and volcanic intervention eventually severed its ties with the ocean and the River Zala, along with several small mountain creeks, eventually fed the lake. Legend states that there is a church in the centre of the water in which a young girl sits weeping, her tears filling the lake. Strange that such a melancholy fable should still be associated with what is probably Hungarys primary tourist resort (Budapest excepted). With a surrounding landscape ideally suited to outdoor pursuits and the silky waters of Balaton a haven for watersports enthusiasts, it often seems quite amazing how peaceful the area remains. Several top resorts line the shores, which range from upmarket hideaways for the cultured and romantic to all singing all dancing lakeside complexes with full-on facilities and wild nightlife. But whatever your taste, there is no denying the magic of the area.
