Home of the famous Bulls Blood wine, 13th century Eger is a cornucopia of beautifully preserved baroque architecture and enjoys an almost Mediterranean atmosphere. The town centre, which is closed to traffic, is ideal for simply wandering at leisure and boasts an impressive 175 protected buildings and monuments, amongst them Eger Cathedral with its 130ft high minaret. Climb the narrow 100step spiral staircase to its top and get some great views. But for the very best views and by far the best way to take in this magnificent city, a visit to the 13th century castle is essential. The incredible overview from this historic vantage point is nothing short of magical – you actually get the impression of stepping into the pages of some colourful storybook of old. Wonderful stuff.
