Iceland - Gullfoss and Geysir

Iceland sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Gullfoss, translated as ‘Golden Falls’, is such a beloved Icelandic wonder that a woman once threatened to throw herself into the falls if it was destroyed. It is easy to see why. Gullfoss boasts a 105-foot double-cascade with the River Hvitá tumbling over two different ledges. The power of the water creates a mass of spray and great mist clouds, which, on a sunlit day cause the falls to be filled with rainbows galore. Gullfoss is colour and motion at its most spectacular. Nearby to Gullfoss is the geyser, that gave the world the word….’geyser’ and its name?…‘Geysir’. Once Iceland’s most famous spouting monster, having started in the 14th century, Geysir is unfortunately no longer able to perform. The site, with its plentiful hot springs, steaming vents, and crazy coloured algae is still an absolute must to visit however and a good spurt can still be enjoyed from the nearby geyser at Strokkur, which shoots a powerful 60-100 foot jet into the air about once every five minutes. This is Mother Nature at her steamiest.
