Iceland - Runtur – Reykjavic’s night and daylife

Iceland sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

In the land of the midnight sun, there are few excuses for not partying the ‘night’ away and that’s exactly what Icelandic people are best at – working hard and playing just that little bit harder. The ‘runtur’ is something of an institution in Reykjavic and is basically a hardcore pub-crawl through the city’s hottest bars, hippest clubs, and loudest live music venues. The idea is that no one misses out on the best action and bright young things cruise around the streets on a set circuit, waving to each other and stopping for short chats. Note that the cost of alcohol is admittedly much pricier here than the rest of Europe, directly linked to the legalisation of beer in 1989 and also that the 'midnight sun' in the summer is notorious for fooling the slightly tipsy punter into thinking it's a lot earlier than it seems. Nevertheless, a runtur is a definite must and if it works its magic well then by the time the pubs and clubs close at 3am, you may not remember your own name. More to the point, if you try the local tipple, Brennivín ominously known as 'Svartidauði' (Black Death), you may never remember it ever again.
