Beyond the beach, hippies and top-notch food Goa has many religious icons and sites for exploring. Among them is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, a place of monumental holiness and significance for Roman Catholics. It is the resting place of St. Vincent Xavier, the patron saint of Goa and for this reason many are drawn to the site. Located in Panaji, the Basilica of Bom is claimed to be the best example of baroque architecture in India. Step inside and you will marvel at the unbelievably ornate and extravagant altar plus the sea of carvings, columns, bronze, marble and precious stones. Whether you are religiously inclined or not, the Basilica is a must see.
