Within the city itself there is a wealth of art galleries, batik centres, performing arts venues and colourful festivals throughout the year. It is a city that has achieved a balance between the rapidly advancing modern world and the dedication to tradition. Explore the Sultan’s walled palace, wander amongst the batik stalls lining the streets and visit the cities many museums. It is Java’s true gem of a city. For yet more culture and taste of old Indonesia head to the surrounding area where mausoleums, temples and architecture of days gone by are just waiting to be discovered. A definite must see is the sunrise at the amazing Borobudur Temple about 40 miles from Yogyakarta.
