Indonesia - Listen to a Gamelan Orchestra

Indonesia sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

For a true treat for your eyes and ears, not to mention a great insight into Indonesian tradition don’t miss a chance to listen in to a Gamelan Orchestra. There are actually two types of Gamelan music in Indonesia, Javanese which is the quiet, hypnotic sounds of metal-key percussions, flutes and hand sticks. Whereas, Balinese Gamelan is on the louder, more dramatic side using the same instruments but integrating gongs and louder beats. Often Gamelan performances are accompanied by colourful dancers creating a full-blown performing arts event. The orchestra itself can usually be found boldly dressed in colourful costumes, sitting on the floor and putting their heart into what has been a well-maintained tradition.
