Rome - The Vatican

Rome sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Sitting on the West side of the Tiber is the imposing and venerable Vatican City. Measuring a tiny 106 acres the Vatican packs an incredible cultural punch. The Vatican comprises St Peter’s, the world’s most famous and revered church, a clutch of museums oozing with the cream of Renaissance art, and of course, the Sistine Chapel adorned Michelangelo’s most famous work. The lengthy restoration of the past few years has revealed that the Sistine Chapel ceiling, instead of being quite dark and gloomy was actually awash with vibrant bright colours and is a definite ‘must-see’ when popping in to see the Pope. Whether Catholic or not, the Vatican City is one of those places on the planet that just has to been visited in a lifetime, if only to post a letter franked from the world’s smallest sovereign state.
