The ancient canyons of Jordan conceal one of the countries greatest historical treasures, the Nabataean city of Petra. Built over 2000 years ago it was quite literally carved out of the pink rocks and stands as a striking example of the industrious Arabian society. Accessible only via the narrow passage known as the Siq, the city contains some truly wonderful examples of Roman and neo-Hellenistic architecture, the highlights of which are El Khazneh with its wonderful carvings of Nabataean gods and goddesses and mythological figures and Al Deir which was used as a monastery during Christian Byzantine times. As you wander along the ancient roads surrounded by Roman theatres, temples, monasteries and private dwellings it is easy to imagine you’re in times gone by. Petra is a breathtakingly spectacular slice of Jordan’s history.
