The souk is far more than just a local market place; it is also the centre of many a Jordanian city’s social life. Usually beginning around 9am, people travel from town to town setting up stalls and selling the appropriate merchandise for the type of souk they have visited. Amman’s downtown area boasts a triple souk where you can buy virtually anything you desire – tobacco, spices, vegetables, pottery, woodwork, clothing, electrical devices, copper goods and most importantly gold. Haggling is the name of the game and the atmosphere is vibrant, sometimes heated. Fortunately the souks are interspersed with numerous cafes and food vendors where you relax and replenish yourself before heading for the next session of avid price wrangling.
