About 60 miles south of Petra the desert of Wadi Rum is as spectacular as it is unusual. Renowned for its strange coloured formations it is an eerie yet beautiful area, which has been inhabited since Neolithic times. The wind has eroded rocks into unearthly forms on which settlers have documented their history. Ancient graffiti and artwork adorn rocks, walls and caves, some of it dating back to the 4th millennium BC. But the practice of painting and etching on rocks is not restricted to prehistoric and ancient times; Bedouins adopted the tradition and today you can see stylised images of cars and weapons. If you experience a little deja-vu when you visit, worry not, it is nothing supernatural, the Wadi Rum Desert was featured quite prominently in the Oscar winning classic movie, Lawrence of Arabia.
