Traditional ruins abound in Baalbek, found in the northern Bekaa Valley, and is one of the most significant Roman sites in the Middle East. The Roman architecture remains are from the first century AD and their lavish designs are due to religious rivalry, when Christianity was trying to replace the Romans’ pagan worship. Visitors will firstly walk through a Great Court, with its two altars, where sacrifices took place, then up a set of stairs, to the Temple of Jupiter. Nearby is the Temple of Bacchus, an architectural beauty, with its intricately carved stone, here, visitors can go up a flight of stairs to a famous keystone, a popular comedy-sketch for 18th-century European travellers.
