Cancun - Aktun Chen Caves

Cancun sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Translated from the Mayan, ‘Aktun Chen’ means, "cave with an underground river inside". Aktun Chen is situated within 988 acres of unexplored Rainforest and this impressive cave complex was once used by the ancient Mayans. Guided by a specialist, there are regular walking tours through the caves where the thousands of stalactites, stalagmites and natural sculptures have been formed by five million years of water and calcium carbonate interaction. The guide will explain how the Mayans made use of these natural formations. 600 metres into the caves is an awe-inspiring ‘cenote’ – a crystal clear water hole measuring 12 metres in depth. This magnificent sinkhole is followed by an equally breathtaking vault containing thousands of stunningly lit stalactites. The Aktun Chen caves are one of many examples in Mexico where nature and culture meet head on and it is an un-missable experience.
