Cancun - Dive to Sunken Ships on Isla Mujeres

Cancun sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Literally translated as the "The Isle of Women", Isla Mujeres lies a mere 13km across the bay from Cancun. Due to the fantastic visibility (approx 80-100ft) in it’s clear warm waters, Isla Mujeres is renowned for it’s drift diving and great snorkelling. There are over 50 dive sites to explore, most of which are only 25mins away. The 300ft cargo ship of "El Frio", alternatively named ‘Ultra Freeze’ lies 90-100ft down around 8miles east of the island. This artificial reef is recommended only to advanced divers and is swarming with marine life including turtles, moray eels, jewfish, red snappers, sharks and barracudas to name a few. Other wrecks include Punta Sur at 40ft where the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean merge and the relatively recent wreck of Cameronero or "Shrimp Boat" at 60-70 ft sunk only 5 years ago. The marine life has already begun to build up and just as fascinating to dive as the others.
