Erg Cherbbi is one of those strange natural phenomena that are beyond explanation. A long mountain of beautifully sculpted red sand it is surrounded by flat arid plains that have been baked in the heat. Legend states that as a punishment for refusing to shelter a woman in distress, God who sent a massive sand storm to bury the original town of Merzouga. Today it is one of the most visited areas in the Sahara and most recently started to attract sports enthusiasts looking for a new thrill. The sport they invented is called Dune Boarding.
Armed with a pair of heavy-duty industrial gloves, a pair of goggles, some furniture polish and a large rectangular sheet of hardboard you climb to the top of one of the larger dunes (800ft). From there you admire the view whilst you catch your breath. The board is then coated with a thick layer of polish and buffed meticulously. Then its just a matter of lying on the board with the front pulled high off the sand; a quick push and you’re off, careering almost uncontrollably towards the base of the sand hill. I’m assured that after several runs you get the knack of steering with your feet but it’s a rather long and very hot climb so I think I’ll take their word for it.
