Morocco - Seafood in Essaouira

Morocco sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

The ancient port of Essaouira quite literally wears its heart on its sleeve; I can think of nowhere else where the fishing industry so well promoted. And I’m not talking about noisy fish vendors or row after row of prize catches on display. This is seafood heaven and the quality of the catch is proven by the quality of the cuisine on offer around the harbour. All over, nestled between fish stalls selling fresh and delicious ready cooked seafood in all shapes and forms, are restaurants with open grills belching out aromatic smoke as waiters scrambled between full picnic tables. Despite all the activity the overall ambience is calm and laid back… there’s no hurry; just relax and enjoy the food.

If the atmosphere is extraordinary then the food is out of this world. Top of the menu is are delicious sardines cooked by seemingly myriad different methods, then there is calamari in spicy sauce, baked John Dory flavoured with garlic, crabs and lobsters, seafood gratin in an almost sinfully creamy sauce, side dishes of couscous, tagine and omelette all washed down with cold beer. The choice is absolutely mind-boggling with fish on the menu that you’ve never even heard of let alone thought about eating. They say that fish is a healthy dish – I would challenge anyone to dine here and come away not feeling guilty with pleasure!
