Morocco - The Dades Valley

Morocco sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

The legendary wilderness of the Old Testament the Dades Valley is as bleak as it is fascinating. A harsh unforgiving landscape it is bound by snow- fields on one side and semi desert on the other. Through the centre the Dades River supplies the elixir of life to an incredible array of lush foliage – fruit, wheat, silver birch, almond and walnuts – which offers gentle relief from the imposing crags that pepper the trail.

Within the valley settlers have erected literally hundreds of kasbahs along the long winding road. Huge clusters of fortresses give way to tiny fields and gardens filled with roses grown and stored for the production of rose water and attar. Women toil along the hedgerows filling straw baskets with the precious petals, which will total 700 tons in weight by the end of the season. The Dades Valley is a place of contradiction, both frightening and alluring it is a strange land, which truly is beyond imagination.
