Rebuilt in the 1930s after a devastating Earthquake (7.9 Richter) and several extensive fires all but destroyed its commercial heart Napier was, by the 40s, the newest city in the world. So extensive is the use of 1930s style including Spanish Classical, Spanish Mission and in particular Art Deco that the City has the look of a film set. Napier’s Art Deco is distinctive insomuch as it combines Maori motifs with the designs of the likes of architect Louis Hay who was greatly influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The stunning architecture is complimented perfectly by the countless palms and Norfolk Island pines, which line the streets and plazas and the surrounding abundantly fertile countryside and dramatic hillsides makes the ideal backdrop. Various tours of the city are available, but you can quite happily wander the streets unaccompanied and you won’t be disappointed. Highlights include the Daily telegraph Building, home to Napier’s local paper, Marine Parade, home to the wonderful Masonic Hotel, Hawkers Bay Chambers and the ASB bank with its authentic Maori carvings. All this wonderful architecture and sunshine, sea and sand too.
