When it was declared a national park in October 1972, it was made up of an area of 31,355 ha, with 20,932ha of that being desert, 8,488 ha being irrigated forest plantation and 1,934 ha a reservoir. The area is crossed by the dried out bed of the River Hakra and contains the Patisar Lake, an ideal place for birdwatching. The wildlife residing at the park includes Blackbuck, an endangered species, Nilgai antelope, Chinkara gazelle, Indian rhinoceros and Hog deer.
