Over 13,000 ft high, the world famous Inca Trail snakes across the enigmatic Andes above the Urubamba River. The trail represents only a small portion of the incredible 30,000 km of paved walkways created by the Incas, but links some of this mysterious culture’s greatest sites. Blurring the boundaries between nature and human engineering, the trail is stepped where necessary, through tunnels hewn through solid rock and even across rivers using gossamer suspension bridges made from straw ropes. Taking 3-4 days to cover, this classic trek winds its way through ethereal cloud forests, rivers and streams with views of deep glacial valleys and snow-capped mountains including the sacred Inca peak of Salcantay. The trail ties together sites such as Llactapata, (the Town on the Hillside), the ‘Egg Hut’ of Runkuracay and Phuyupatamarca, the Cloud-Level Town. Highly recommended is Wiñay Wayna meaning ‘forever young’ - a set of ruins, which compete with Machu Picchu in beauty. The trail finally reaches the Sun Gate to the silent stone city of Machu Picchu itself where the weary trekker can explore the eerie lost city of the Incas. The trail is like a necklace connecting a series of fascinating Inca gems and who could resist trekking through Dead Woman Pass?
