A child, when asked to imagine a jungle, will no doubt picture dense green flora concealing mischievous monkeys and dotted with the bright and colourful feathers of exotic birds whilst the waters heave with unseen dangerous creatures. They imagine the archetypal jungle…basically, the Amazon. Home to 250 species of mammals, 3000 freshwater fish, 10,000 trees and 70,000 other plant species plus 1800 psychedelic birds, the Amazon is the world’s richest rainforest. New species are constantly discovered amongst its thick tropical verdana, which stretches for more than two million square miles. Experts cannot even agree on the number of insects, there are so many! Some say 15,000, others say 60 million! With the greatest biological diversity on the planet, there are endangered species such as jaguars, giant river otters, manatees and harpy eagles as well as simply dangerous species such as the universally feared piranha fish. More than one third of all the species in the world live in the Amazon rainforest and the WWF do all they can to protect and maintain the delicate balance of what is undoubtedly Earth’s most fascinating ecosystem.
