Many people may not have heard of Oswiecim, until the name Auschwitz is mentioned, as this is the place where many Jews were tortured and killed during the Second World War. Oswiecim’s concentration camp was partly destroyed by the Germans in 1945, but the remains of the gas chambers, crematoria and barracks, still show the extent of the holocaust. The camp was the largest of all the camps, with the linked area of Birkenau close by, creating a horrendous total of 2.5 million Jews being killed within both concentration camps. Untouched since the war, the awful reality of these concentration camps can be seen by the public.
