Algarve - Meander through the Charming Town of Tavira

Algarve sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

30km east of Faro’s tourist hustle and bustle lies the atmospheric town of Tavira. This historical tuna fishing port, developed under Moorish occupation is quaint and refreshingly quiet. With a fascinating ruined castle towering over an intricate maze of narrow streets containing over thirty-seven churches, Tavira is full of character. Beautiful 18th century houses built after the detrimental Great Earthquake border the Gião River and there are even surviving 16th century mansions with original Manueline windows to be found in the back streets. Meander down to the quay, and even sample some of the town’s most famous produce – tuna, at one of the numerous restaurants. Not for the wild at heart, but perfect for a tranquil day amongst stunningly beautiful surroundings.
