Madeira - Levada Walks

With fine walking weather all the year round, Madeira has enough breathtaking scenery to sink a ship. Suitable for all ages, from beginners to hardened experts, levada walks along the irrigating channels that cover the whole island range from ‘easy to follow’ to ‘a real challenge’. There are an impressive 2150 km (1350 miles) of channels on the island, 40 km (25 miles) of which are tunnels constructed centuries ago. Round every bend and curve is something new to discover and makes for a fascinating walk on this scenic island. From tranquil waterfalls, UNESCO protected vegetation to emerald green rain forest and majestic mountains and valleys – a levada walk is a trail through some of the most idyllic scenery in Portugal.
