Madeira - Porto Santo

Madeira sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Nicknamed the 'Pearl of the Atlantic', Porto Santo is the only other inhabited island of the Madeiran archipelago. With 9 km stretch of beautiful sandy beaches, which even possess therapeutic and medicinal properties if legend is to be believed, you can begin to see where the nickname comes from. The sea is always warm and ideal for swimming all throughout the year and the people are wonderfully friendly. The island also has plenty of history including the accolade that this was the very island where Columbus married the Governor's daughter and it is even possible to visit the 15th century house where Colombus once resided. Other historical sites include the beautiful church known as 'Chiesa Mae' and the 18th century São José fort. Madeira’s little sister is well worth a visit.
