A mere youngster at 25-30 million years old, Lake Baikal, safely the oldest lake in the world measures 636 km long, 80 km wide, and has 2100 km of coastline – impressive to say the least. Lake Baikal region is full of amazing statistics, not least of which is the fact that it’s home to over 1200 different species of animal and 1000 species of plants, 80% of which are endemic to the area. This region, known as the ‘Pearl of Siberia’, is one of the most beautiful and naturally spectacular areas of the country, surrounded by mountains and prone to stunning sunsets. Unfortunately threatened by rising levels of pollution, the natural splendour of the Lake Baikal Region has to be seen to be believed.
