South Korea - Bongwonsa

South Korea sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Originally destroyed during the Korean War, this 9th century Buddhist temple, built during Silla Kingdom on Mount Geumhwasan, has now been totally rebuilt. The temple sits proudly at the headquarters of the Taego sect of Korean Buddhism and is a sect which allows its monks to get married, something which is a definite no-no amongst other sects. Visitors to the area need to have a look at the temple’s very interesting main building, as it has been made without using a single nail! The temple also puts on a show for tourists on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month, something which originally came from a 3 day-ritual of monks; and afterwards a beautiful spread is laid on, allowing visitors to taste the traditional food of Buddhist Monks, all of which is vegetarian.
