Lanzarote - Sample Malmsey Wine and Browse the Bodegas

The Duke of Clarence was drowned in it and Admiral Nelson's body was embalmed in it for the voyage home from Trafalgar; probably Lanzarote’s most famous export is Malvasía wine (or Malmsey). The wine growers have had to go to great lengths to produce this distinctive white wine. The vines are planted in large holes scraped out of the lava and protected from searing hot winds by semicircular walls. With such a low level of rainfall the farmers rely on a layer of volcanic dust on top of the gravel to retain moisture from the morning dew and thus maintain humidity. The upside is that the richness of the volcanic soil ensures healthy grapes with a good flavour. A visit to one of the islands bodegas is well worth it, not only is it educational it’s also an ideal way to sample this most delicious of beverages.
