Formally the capital of Lanzarote (Arrecife took the role in 1852), Teguise has maintained its reputation as a cultural and historical centre of the island in spite of mass tourism. A veritable treasure trove of monuments its streets are filled with palaces, convents and handsome squares, which trace the islands history back to its early Christian and Morrish roots and retain its dignity perfectly. Major places of interest include Spinola Palace, the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the convents of San Francisco de Miraflores and Santo Domingo and the Castle of Santa Barbara.
