Majorca - Rambling round Sa Dragonera

Majorca sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

An uninhabited island off Majorca’s western coast, Sa Dragonera hit the headlines in 1977 when it became occupied by environmentalists determined to stop encroaching tourism from claiming it for another ‘paradise resort’. They were successful and the island was declared a nature reserve ensuring the survival of the countless resident bird colonies and indigenous Balearic flora. Taking its name from its shape, Sa Dragonera is six kilometres long with impressive cliffs on its far coast and an ancient watchtower at its highest point. Visits to the island are restricted to summer when you can take a boat trip from Sant Elm.
