Sweden - Ancient Lund

Sweden sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Situated in the southern region of Sweden known as Skane, Lund is one of the oldest cities in the country, although the date of its origin has proven somewhat of a mystery. Originally believed to have been founded by the legendary King Canute of Denmark in around AD 1020 (it became part of Sweden in 1658) it is now believed to have been founded almost 100 years earlier. Indeed in 1970 the City celebrated its 950th anniversary only to celebrate it 1000th anniversary in 1990 due to the discovery of fresh archaeological finds.

Whatever the case Lund has earned a reputation as one of the great centres of Swedish culture, art and history. It is traditionally a seat of learning and is home to the oldest and largest universities in Scandinavia with around 35,000 students. Above all Lund is a meeting place, famous for its research and creativity. The architectural heritage is incredible with centuries-old buildings, winding passages, and cobbled streets. Pride of place is taken by the ancient cathedral, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in northern Europe. An increasingly popular tourist destination Lund has benefited by its proximity to two major airports - Malmo and Copenhagen
