Sweden - Drottingholm Palace

Sweden sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Only seven miles outside Stockholm on Lake Malaren is Drottingholm or ‘Queen’s Island’ home of the Royal Family and often referred to as the Versailles of Sweden. The palace is a truly magnificent royal residence, a masterpiece of baroque architecture filled with elegant reception rooms and fabulous works of art. The surrounding grounds contain wonderful French and English gardens, a Chinese pavilion and the world’s oldest working theatre. Dating from 1781 the stage machinery has been kept in perfect working order, still manoeuvring scenery and providing sound effect for presentations during the summer season.

You can tour the breathtaking interior of the Palace, bar the south wing, which has been the residence of the Swedish royal family since 1981 and if you have time the island itself is easily explored and very pleasant indeed.
