Sweden - Vadstena on Lake Vattern

On the shore of Lake Vattern, the second largest lake in Sweden (738sq miles), stands the ancient town of Vadstena. Widely renowned as one of the most pleasant towns in the country it is also one of the most picturesque with its cobbled streets and buildings dating back to the 14th century. The town is centred on the Renaissance castle, Vadstena Slott, which looks out over the harbour and the Lake beyond. Built as a home for the early Vasa kings it contains some wonderful examples of period furniture and paintings that include work by Van Dyck. Other landmarks include 15th century cloistered abbey a combination of Gothic and Renaissance architecture that houses the famous relics of St.Birgitta and the Bjälboättens Palats which has been both a convent and a royal home. What Vadstena lacks in size is more than made up for in the wealth of history on display, that and its wonderful lakeside setting.
