Switzerland has been synonymous with watch making for centuries and Geneva lies at the very heart of this timepiece-obsessed nation as the proud birthplace of watch making itself. During the 18th century you were a big fat ‘nobody’ unless you owned a watch from Geneva, universally renowned for quality watches of sheer elegance. The city honours its horological genius in a number of ways, the most flamboyant being the ‘Floral Clock’. Over 6,500 plants are used to create this monument, located in the Jardin Anglais and one of the most photographed sites in Geneva. Measuring a massive 5m in diameter, it consists of a movement using the largest second-hand in the world. There is also the Clock and Watch Museum, showing off the city’s best watches, clocks and clock-making tools as well as displays illustrating the history of the measurement of time. Amongst its many trade fairs, Geneva naturally hosts the International Luxury Watch Exhibition each year, and where better than the city that eats, sleeps and breathes time keeping.
