Geneva - Jet d’eau

Geneva sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

The iconic Jet d’eau has come a long way since its pygmy-like beginnings as a meagre spurt caused by craftsmen switching off hydraulic pressure taps after work. Now taking centre stage in the middle of Geneva Harbour, the considerably more spectacular 140m/460 ft high jet of water has become the very symbol of the city itself. Signalling the coming of spring each year, the powerful column of water spouts majestically over the lake with a staggering 500 litres of water being forced out per second at a rate of 200kph. Visible from anywhere in the city, the Jet d’eau is active from the week of Ascension Thursday in May until the first Sunday of October. This real mother of the fountain world is illuminated at night to create a fantastic light and water show and if you’re in Geneva, you’ve little choice but to see it.
