The first people to ride the waves were actually Polynesians, riding the surf on wooden boards; but to find out who actually made the proper surfboard remains a mystery! Today though, surfboards are everywhere, with the best places to surf being at the ‘passes’, or open ocean entryways into the lagoon. Visitors wanting to do a bit of surfing, while in Tahiti, need to venture off to one of the coasts, either Paea break, Papenoo break near Mahina, Taapuna and Punaauia passes, Papara Black Sand beach or the spectacular Teahupoo on Tahiti’s peninsula. Visitors new to the sport will find surfing schools throughout Tahiti, to help them gain the skills to surf the lip and ride the tube!
