In the heart of Taipei, the capital and biggest city of Taiwan, sits the National Palace Museum. The art first arrived in Taiwan during the war, when the treasure was ferried in many boxes, from the Forbidden City of Beijing, to around China by ship and train, until the 1940’s, when it finally came to rest in Taiwan, hidden in mountain caves for many years, with hardly any damage from the continuing bombings! Today, the National Palace Museum cares for the largest Chinese art collection worldwide, with over 700,000 items including collections of ancient bronzes, ceramics, jade and lacquer ware. Visitors will need at least two days to view the whole of the museum including the majestic-styled gardens next door.
