A large group of islands, 64 in fact, are found halfway between the mainland and Taiwan and are named the Penghu Islands. A happy contrast from the town-style look of Taiwan, with level areas covered in bush and vegetation, the Penghu Islands attract many a visitor to its beautiful beaches, clear blue seas, delicious food and hot steamy weather, May to September. Makung, the only city on Penghu Island, is a quaint place, with a harbour, outdoor temples and amongst its markets, Taiwan's oldest.
